Singular Observations
Ray Metzker, who I considered one of my mentors, once told me that he shot somewhere around 2,000 rolls of 35mm film each year. That's 72,000 pictures! Rudolph Serkin, a world famous pianist who I had the good fortune of meeting one summer at his home in Vermont, said that as he prepared for a concert tour in his 70s he practiced so long running scales that his fingers bled. The point is you have to stay in shape--whether it's exercising your body or you're mind, your vision, your creativity, or your spirit. It's critical to practice your craft so that when the time for performance is upon you, you will be ready to excel.
The images in this portfolio are essentially that, practice. They are not part of some larger project or defining of my vision. They are one-offs. Small things I noticed as I passed by. A moment of light or a gesture. A juxtaposition of an unlikely pairing. Here and there a comment on the state of our world. Sometimes a bit of beauty in photography (thank you Robert Adams), Have fun with them. I have.
